It Takes A Village
It Takes A Village explores the utilization of digital found objects combined with physical found objects to craft grotesquely visceral virtual physical objects.
By utilizing conceptions of the grotesque and the abject from Mark Fisher and Julia Kristeva (with ongoing research into other philosophical understandings of these concepts, alongside the carnivalesque, from thinkers such as Mikhail Bakhtin) combined with Elizabeth Grosz's (from Gilles Deleuze) concept of art as sensation creator, and artistic precedent from Francis Bacon's work, particularly his "screaming popes" series of paintings, and especially "Figure with Meat;" I am crafting uncanny sculptural vessels that challenge the aesthetic perceptions of natural and artificial in order to inspire critical consciousness (from Paulo Freire) and engagement with the other (from bell hooks) in viewers so that they will question the status quo projections of false inevitabilities to imagine new, more equitable presents and futures.
